THE PLAVAC MALI GRAPEVINE IS A NATIVE GRAPEVINE OF MIDDLE AND SOUTHERN DALMATIA. IT WAS MADE BY GRAFTING  TWO DIFFERENT GRAPEVINES, THE CRLJENAK OF KAŠTELA  ( WHICH IS IDENTICAL WITH  THE FAMOUS CALIFORNIAN ZINFANDEL AND ITALIAN PRIMITIVO) AND  THE DOBRIČIĆ  OF ŠOLTA. THESE  TWO ARE  THE FOREFATHERS OF THE PLAVAC MALI. THE VINE HAS HIGHLY ADJUSTED TO THE HOT MEDITERRANEAN CLIMATE AND  RUGGED SOIL. THE PLAVAC MALI GRAPEVINE THAT GROWS ON  THE  SUNNY SOUTHERN SLOPES OF THE PENINSULA  PRODUCES HIGH QUALITY WINES THAT ARE STRONG, FULL  AND LONG-LASTING. THE  GRAPE HARVEST VARIES FROM 4.000 TO 15.000 KILOS PER HECTAR, DEPENDING ON THE LOCATION. THE WINE IS USUALLY VERY RICH IN TANNINS AND  OCCASIONALY BITTER WITH A VERY HIGH ALCOHOL CONTENT RANGING FROM 13 TO 15% ALCOHOL BY VOLUME. IT  HAS A SLIGHTLY DOMINANT SWEET AROMA AS A RESULT OF BLENDING A  HIGH ALCOHOL CONTENT, TANNINS,  AND  AN UNFERMENTED SUGAR RESIDUE WHILE AT THE SAME IT POSSESSES A RICH AND HEALTHY WINE BODY. THE AROMA OF PLAVAC MALI IS EASY TO RECOGNIZE. IT IS A COMBINATION OF A SWEET TONE OF DRY OR  BAKED FRUIT WITH A MILD AROMA OF CHERRY, BLUEBERRY AND AN EASILY  DISCERNIBLE MUSK TONE.
